Writing voice-over scripts for short video ads
A short ad has room for fewer words than you think. Write for the ear, keep sentences short, and leave a moment of silence for the picture to work.
How many words fit
- Speech runs at roughly 2 to 3 words a second, or about 15 to 17 characters.
- 15 seconds: about 30 to 40 words.
- 30 seconds: about 65 to 75 words.
- 60 seconds: about 130 to 150 words.
- SupaSwirl shows the seconds as you type and stops the script at the video's length. Our free script timer does the same before you start.
A simple structure
- Hook (first 2–3 s): a question or bold line.
- Problem or desire: one sentence.
- Product: what it is and the one thing that matters most.
- Proof: a detail people can see.
- Call to action: what to do now.
Example: 15 seconds
- Script
- Tired of bitter coffee? Meet our cold brew: steeped for eighteen hours, smooth and bold. Just pour over ice. Order today and get free delivery on your first box.
Write for the ear
- Use short sentences with one idea each.
- Say numbers the way people say them: “nine ninety”, not “$9.90”.
- Read it aloud once. If you run out of breath, cut words.
- Match the voice to the brand: calm for premium, upbeat for offers.
