15 visual hooks for TikTok ads (with AI video prompts)
A hook line only works if the first picture earns a second look. A visual hook is the opening shot itself: a move, a reveal or a strange moment that makes the thumb stop. Here are 15, grouped by how you make them.
Why the first shot matters
People decide within a second or two whether to keep watching, often with the sound off. Movement and surprise catch the eye before any words are read. So the opening shot deserves as much thought as the hook line: plan it on purpose, keep it short, and change only that shot when you test.
Camera and product moves (AI video does these well)
- 1. Slide into frame: the product shoots in from the side and stops dead in the centre.
- 2. Quick zoom out: start on a tiny detail (a texture, a drop, a stitch), then pull out fast to the whole product.
- 3. Camera pull back: begin tight, then reveal a bigger, unexpected scene around the product.
- 4. Camera rotate: a fast orbit around the product with strong light, so its shape reads at once.
- 5. Walk towards camera: a person strides straight at the lens with the product, ending close up.
- 6. Object metaphor: an everyday object stands for the problem (a tangled cable, a wilted plant), then the product takes its place.
- 7. Timer countdown: a real kitchen timer or hourglass runs out next to the product. It works well for offers.
- 8. Laptop or phone turn: hands swing a screen round to face the camera and show the product.
- 9. Close-up stack: three or four very short close-ups in a row. Make each as its own short clip and join them.
Prompts to start from
- Quick zoom out
- Extreme close-up of condensation on a cold glass bottle, then a fast zoom out reveals the whole bottle on a sunny kitchen counter, crisp light.
- Object metaphor
- A crumpled paper cup of old coffee sits on a desk; a glass of iced cold brew slides in and pushes it out of frame, morning light.
- Walk towards camera
- A young woman walks confidently straight towards the camera on a city street holding a tote bag, ending in a close-up of the bag, handheld feel.
- Timer countdown
- Close-up of a small mechanical kitchen timer ticking down to zero beside a skincare bottle on a bathroom shelf, soft daylight.
Talking hooks (need a video model that speaks)
- 10. Random object as a mic: someone talks to camera into a banana, a hairbrush or the product itself.
- 11. Wired earphone mic: holding the earphone cable up like a lapel mic, as creators do.
- 12. Driving and talking: a parked car, seat belt on, chatting to the phone.
- 13. Busy hands: talking while doing something unrelated, like folding laundry or making tea.
- 14. Talking in front of the subject: standing in front of the shop, the shelf or the product in use.
- Use a model with speech (such as Veo 3.1) for these. Never present an AI-made person as a real customer, and never invent reviews.
Made in editing, not in the prompt
- 15. Split screen or whiteboard: the problem on one side, the product on the other. AI video models make one continuous shot and draw text badly, so make two clips and put them side by side in an editor, with the words added on top.
Test three openings
You rarely know which opening wins until people see it. In the Ad builder, when your ad is ready, choose Test 3 hook versions and pick three styles. Only the opening shot is made again; the rest of the ad and its voice-over are reused. Post the versions and keep the one people watch longest.
No product in mind yet? Our free TikTok hook generator suggests a hook line and a visual hook for each idea.
Questions
What is a visual hook?
The opening shot of a short video, designed to stop people scrolling: a movement, reveal or surprising moment in the first second, usually paired with a short hook line on screen.
Can AI video make visual hooks?
Yes. Camera moves and staged openings such as a slide into frame, quick zoom out, pull back, orbit, walk towards camera, object metaphor or timer countdown work well. Split screens and written text are better added in editing.
How do I test different hooks for the same ad?
Keep the rest of the ad the same and change only the opening. In SupaSwirl's Ad builder, Test 3 hook versions remakes only the first shot in three styles and reuses everything else.
